Remove an unused defined name from Excel

A workbook can accumulate names left over from retired reports. Removing a known unused name helps keep the workbook's automation interface understandable.

Decide what success means

Inspect the output’s names and any affected formulas. Treat an unexpected calculation change as a dependency issue, not as evidence that removing the name was harmless.

Prepare and run

List names and search the workflow for dependencies before removing one. A name that is not visible on a sheet can still be used by formulas.

These examples use local sample filenames. Substitute your own paths and check jetformat excel remove-name --help against the installed version before running the task. Put paths containing spaces inside quotes.

jetformat excel remove-name finance.xlsx --name Revenue -o revised.xlsx

Use the exact name reported by excel names. Removing a named range does not mean deleting the underlying worksheet cells.

Inspect the saved result

List names again and check formulas that previously used the removed name.

Scope and repeatability

Writing an Office document uses one credit per command. See the billing guide for the current rules.

Keep the input revision with the result so a later reviewer can reproduce the decision. For a write operation, choose a new output path first; use overwrite flags only when replacing a previously reviewed result is intentional.

See the excel remove-name options and examples for the command reference. Browse related excel commands when the next step requires a different operation.
